This week in Social Studies we will wrap our discussion on Human Rights. This will prepare them for the fishbowl discussion that they will have in English.
Lesson 1 – We will look at article 26 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights: Education. The students will see some statistics about education (primarily in Africa) and then will read one of four articles relating to education in Africa. The students will then share their information about their article with students who read the articles in a jigsaw activity so all students will have the important points of each article.
Lesson 2 – To start off the lesson the students will take a technology survey for grade 7. Then we will have a discussion about the articles the students read in the previous class. This will be followed by another practice discussion using persuasive language about the benefits of education and healthcare being a human right. Then we will make a relationship brainframe that will put on paper all the facts and concepts we have discussed while highlighting the 4 human rights we discussed in both English and Social Studies.
Lesson 3 – As always, we will start lesson 3 with a kahoot of the week’s current events. We will then make a categorizing brainframe about the human right that the students have been assigned to discuss in English. This brainframe will be an organized way for the students to get their talking points on paper for the fishbowl discussion.
*All reassessments must be completed by Friday so I can have time to grade them and put them into Powerschool as well as take that into consideration while I write report card comments. Thank you for understanding that this is a long process and students should not have waited until the very end of the semester to reassess.
This is our first full week in quite some time, I hope everyone is up for it. This week we will be looking at very specific articles from the UN Declaration of Human Rights. There will be a total of 4 different articles that we focus on in both Social Studies and English and the students will use the information that they learn for the final performance task of the year, a debate.
Lesson 1 – This first lesson will look at slavery and article 4 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Students will do a true/false activity about some facts, watch a video clip about slavery in Mauritania, and then read a couple of articles about slavery around the world.
Lesson 2 – The second lesson will look at refugees and article 14 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Students will answer a question on padlet, view a presentation, watch a couple short video clips and do a wrap activity to see statistics of refugees around the world.
Lesson 3 – We will start the lesson with a weekly Kahoot quiz about current events. Then, students will use there knowledge from the first two case studies that we have looked at to answer some questions. They will be using persuasive language including stating an argument and backing that argument up with facts. This will be great practice for the kind of language they will then have to use in the debate.
This week students will finish up their essays and then shift their focus to the next half of the unit: Human Rights.
Lesson 1 – All students will create a telling brainframe about other factors that need to be considered when redrawing the borders of Africa. They will discuss as a class different things such as resources, current government and population as different factors that would need to be considered if redrawing the borders.
Lesson 2 – Students will have their first look at at Human Rights. We will go into the history of the UN Human Rights Declaration, countries that support human rights treaties and then start to refocus on Africa and different human rights violations that are occurring there.
*Blocks A & C will also have their Kahoot, current events quiz lesson 2 since they do not have a lesson 3 this week.
Lesson 3 (F, G & H) – We will start the lesson with the weekly current events quiz. After the quiz, we will wrap up any questions from the previous day’s presentation about the introduction to Human Rights and then well start talking about a specific Human Rights area having to do with Sudan.

This week is a short week due to Activity Day on Thursday and No School on Friday.
All students will be working on redrawing the borders of Africa this week for all lessons. They will be using information learned in Social Studies in order to make the map of Africa more logical than it currently is. After that, they will then write a persuasive essay explaining why their map is better than the current political map. Since this unit is an interdisciplinary unit with English, the essay writing will take place in both classes so the students have more time to write, edit and revise which will hopefully give them plenty of time to craft a great essay.

There was an issue with the blog server last week on Monday so I wasn’t able to update the blog then and then I got busy the rest of the week and forgot about the blog. Please excuse the missed blog last week.
This week the students will continue their in-depth look at Africa.
Lesson 1 – Students will finish up the maps that they had started last week. Then they will look at Nigeria as a case study for conflicts. They will watch a few videos and read an article to help them better understand the situation there.
Lesson 2 – They will use the maps they created (religious, ethnic and language families) in order to make a brain frame. The brain frame will use the case studies they have looked at in both English and Social Studies to figure out the main cause of the conflict. Then they will use the maps to determine where they believe potential conflict may break out in the future.
Lesson 3 – Students will be introduced to the assessment. They will be asked to redraw Africa’s borders. They will use the conflicts they have studied for justification for why they have drawn their map the way they have. Later they will be asked to write about their reasons but first, they will redraw the map.
The Redrawn map of Africa will be due April 27 for all classes.
Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable break. I had a great time exploring Morocco! We are officially starting the fourth quarter today and have 10 weeks of school left, not that anyone is counting.
Here is the Quarter 3 Newsletter. It has a summary of what we did in Q3 and a preview of Q4.
Lesson 1 – Students will be introduced to the new unit – Truth. We will be covering the history of Africa from colonialism to today, looking at various maps of Africa and then finishing the unit with human rights. The students will watch a brief video, followed by a fact or fib activity about Africa and then finally they will be familiarizing themselves with the continent by labeling a map.
Lesson 2 – In order to better understand the current situation in Africa, the students will do a simulation about the Scramble for Africa. They will be broken up into groups and will represent a European country claiming territory in Africa. After the activity, there will be a debrief to better understand how the Scramble for Africa worked.
Lesson 3 – We will start the lesson with Kahoot, the quiz about current events. Students get the information for the quiz from CNN Student News. After that, we will look at some of the reasons why the European countries wanted to colonize Africa. We will look at different data tables including natural resources.
This week students will focus on International Trade in preparation for next week’s stock market simulation.
Lesson 1 – Students will be introduced to the 6 Thinking Hats which will help them organize their notes for the International Trade readings. They will read the first three sections: Why do people trade?, What is protectionism? and finally, What is free trade? Students will be responsible for taking notes that they will share with their group next class.
Lesson 2 – This lesson will start out with a discussion using academic conversation about what the students read in the previous class. Once they have finished their discussion, they will read the remaining 3 sections of the International Trade readings. The 3 sections are: What is globalization? How has globalization affected trade? And Free trade. Again they will take notes and highlight information in their their readings.
Lesson 3 – We will start the class with a Kahoot about this week’s CNN Student News shows. Then we will have an academic discussion about the readings from the previous class. And to wrap up the week, students will start looking towards the Student Led Conferences (SLC) which will be held on March 16. They will start thinking about what assignments/assessments from Social Studies they would like to highlight during the SLC.

Lesson 1 – MAP Testing (Language Test)
Lesson 2 – Students will have about 30 minutes to finish up their compare and contrast paragraphs which will complete the Silk Road Map and Guide Assessment. Then they will look at some vocabulary that has to do with international trade. They will do a knowledge rating and then define the words with a partner.
Lesson 3 – CNN Student News Kahoot will start off the lesson. And then the students will have a chance to share what item they have traded for in the Trading Up activity. And finally we will do an activity to review the International Trade Vocabulary.

Lesson 1 (A & C) – Students will make compare and contrast brainframes that they will use in the following lesson to write some paragraphs. They are comparing and contrasting their section of the Silk Road that they researched with the other sections researched by other groups.
Lesson 1 (F, G, H) – These students have already completed the brainframes and will begin writing their paragraphs about the comparisons and contrasts between human and physical characteristics along the Silk Road. G and H will need to finish by the end of class or attend tutorials to finish because this is the only lesson I have with them this week.
Lesson 2 (A & C) – These students will begin writing their paragraphs about the comparisons and contrasts between human and physical characteristics along the Silk Road. If the students do not finish the paragraphs they will need to attend tutorials in order to complete their work.
Lesson 2 (F) – For this lesson, students in F Block will have a catch up day. They will have the class time to complete any part of the Silk Road Map and Guide Assessment that they have not completed. This includes: Collaboration Evaluation Sheet, Unifying Characteristics Chart or the Compare and Contrast Paragraphs using the brainframes. If all of the students have completed their assessments then we will play the Silk Road Trading Game.
Lesson 3 – No Students have a third lesson this week due to the time off on Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the long weekend!
