August 24 – 28

I hope everyone had a wonderful 3-day weekend!  Hopefully the weather was not too bothersome.  Due to the holiday Friday, A Block and C Block are one class ahead.  This will even out when we have the holiday next Monday.

This Week:

F, G, H – These classes will watch Eye of the Storm.  It is a classroom experiment done in the 60’s to teach discrimination and how it affects us.

All classes will be introduced to the first summative assessment: Stereotyping Assignment.  Instructions, rubric, examples and sentence starters can all be found on Google Drive.  For this assignment, students will submit the final copy via Google Classroom.  A and C Blocks will have conferences with me 3rd lesson this week to get an update on the progress of this assignment.  F, G, and H will have their conferences next week, first lesson.

To wrap up this week, each class will be doing a culture simulation.  There will be two groups of students that come from different made up cultures.  They will learn about their assigned culture and then will meet the other group to try and learn about their customs.  It should be a lot of fun!

Stereotyping Assignment – First Summative Assessment due:

A Block – Tuesday 9/1

C Block – Wednesday 9/2

F Block – Wednesday 9/2

G Block – Thursday 9/3

H Block – Thursday 9/3

Introduction

I just wanted to introduce myself, the Grade 7 Social Studies team and the Social Studies course to you, please see the attached Newsletter. It’s been a busy first full week. We have jumped right in to Unit 1: Identity. Students have been looking at perception and the characteristics that make them who they are. This week we will be looking at stereotypes and their causes and effects. I look forward to meeting you at the upcoming Open House on August 27. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to send me an email.
